Sitti conquers the Big AppleFUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo

Philippines' bossa nova queen Sitti (Navarro), currently on a US concert tour, can hardly wait for the New York City leg of her tour. "Not only because it's her first time to perform in the Big Apple," said Funfare's New York correspondent Edmund Silvestre (of The Filipino Reporter), "but also because she will be accompanied by an international band who has played for the likes of Tony Bennett, Sergio Mendes, Gloria Gaynor, Eddie Murphy, Freddie Jackson, Bill Withers and Cuba Gooding & The Main Ingredient, plus Brazil's superstars Beth Carvalho, Zeze Motta and Jair Rodrigues."
Playing for Sitti is the renowned band of jazz producer Clyde Bullard, producer of FlushingTown Hall's Jazz Live! series since 1998 and principal bassist for the Boys Choir of Harlem (both in New York) for over 17 years now. He has performed in over 25 Broadway and off-Broadway shows (including A Chorus Line and Two Gentlemen of Verona) and has produced large-scale productions in the US and other countries.
Edmund happily reported that Sitti in the City will be staged on Sept. 5 (at 7 p.m.) at the Rebel Club at 251 West 30th Street (between 7th and 8th avenues). Rebel Club, one of Manhattan's newest and trendiest dance, lounge and live music venues, is located one block from Madison Square Garden.
AAR Productions, producer of Sitti in the City, was quoted by Edmund as saying that putting Sitti and Clyde Bullard together in New York City's hottest music spot is a major event that should not be missed by fans of Brazilian music, particularly bossa nova.
"I'm really thrilled about the New York show because I will be performing with some of the world's best musicians," the lovely singer known for her soothing voice, told Funfare in a brief phone chat. "It will be an honor to be added to the roster of performers this group has accompanied over the years."
Joining Clyde Bullard are Meia Noite (percussionist of Sergio Mendes), Sly Scott (saxophone and flute), Ian James MacDonald (accordion), Gil Olizeira (drums), Ron Jackson (guitar), and Miho Nobuzane (keyboard).
Dr. Ramon Benito, a respected Filipino-American New York dentist dubbed "The Singing Dentist," and upcoming singer Caryl Kristen Dizon, a multi-talented performer and Ivy Leaguer, will be the opening acts.
Sitti, whose 2006 album, Cafe Bossa, is a certified double platinum, is known for the hits Tattooed On My Mind, Girl From Ipanema, At 17 and Samba Song, to name a few. She was recently named Female Recording Artist of the Year by the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation.
